In responding to questions throughout this book it is important to begin with: What am I willing to do? Given that Cultural Proficiency is an “inside-out” process, as an educator you must understand that Cultural Proficiency begins with ourselves as the educator(s) and moves outward in influences the manner in which we interact with our colleagues and the communities we serve. Equitable and socially just school-family, community partnership practices align educators’ vision for equity through involving our migrant families and communities to focus on student achievement, to work with community partners, to communicate with migrant families, and to assure them they are an integral part of the educational and local learning community.

Positive behaviors displayed by school personnel serving our migrant populations result in families experiencing their migrant seasonal work, their cultures, and their languages being valued by the school and the larger community. Valuing the cultural assets that migrant students and their families bring to our schools builds our capacity to make any necessary shifts in being mindful of just and equitable outcomes for migrant students.
